A man called me last year to find out more about estate planning. I told him about some of the options he had, and he said he would call me back. He jokingly assured me that he would not need the estate plan any time soon, so he would get to it later.
When I never heard back from him, I got a bit worried. I asked around a little bit and found out that he had been tragically killed in a car accident just a month after we spoke.
It really opened my eyes to one of the biggest reasons that people do not do their estate planning. They simply do not think they will need it in the near future. They assume they have decades of life left ahead of them. In some ways, they act like they’re never going to die.
We all know, of course, that we’re going to pass away eventually. That’s a simple fact of human existence. However, many people still do not like to talk about it or even to think about it. They believe, deep down, that planning for it is a way of admitting that the end is coming.
Often, we also ignore the unpredictability of life. The man who called me was in great shape, and he was only 55 years old. He had all the reason in the world to assume he’d live for 20 or 30 more years. But he didn’t.
It is important to understand your estate planning options. It is never too early to get that plan in place.
