Estate planning in your 30s: It's time to take action

Are you in your 30s? If so, you know that you have a long life ahead of you. For this reason, it's easy to put estate planning on the backburner.

However, now's not the time to overlook the importance of estate planning. Instead, now's the time to realize that your life is changing and an estate plan is more important than ever.

There is a lot that you need to know about estate planning, including the fact that no two people are in the exact same position. For this reason, the steps that you take will not be the same as the next person.

Even so, if you're in your 30s, here are several estate planning tips that you can follow:

-- Create a will. At the very least, a will helps ensure that your property goes to the right person or people upon your death. Note: There are many types of trusts that can take the place of a will.

-- Use a living will. This has nothing to do with what will happen to your assets after your death. Instead, its purpose is to outline your wishes if you become incapacitated and are unable to make your own decisions.

-- Focus on the benefits of a durable power of attorney. With this, you identify a person who can make financial decisions on your behalf should you be unable to do so on your own. For example, your agent can manage your assets and pay your bills.

Along with all the above, don't overlook the importance of purchasing a life insurance policy. With this, you and your family will have greater peace of mind.

While these are among the most important parts of an estate plan, they are far from the only details that deserve your attention.

Many people, especially those in their 30s, don't realize that estate planning is important to their future. Instead, they think they will have plenty of time to deal with this at some point down the road.

Since you never know what the future holds, you should not put off the estate planning process. Instead, create an estate plan as soon as possible. Doing so early in life will give you a head start on the future.
